Hello all.
Thanks to Jeff for his additions. We are at Demopolis Yacht Basin, snug and secure until this thing called Ida passes. We've had several days of great weather for traveling, met some wonderful fellow cruisers, anchored out (that's really challenging in some spots with Dinah), and dodged lots of debris (grasses and logs) in both the locks and the waterway itself. We're very aware of the decreasing daylight: that means we have to be moving early in the mornings (light but after the fog burns off) and stop by 2 or 3 to get a good anchorage before darkness by 5:15. We have traveled anywhere from 30-45 miles a day, depending on the anchorages to which we were heading.
The areas we've traveled through... eastern MS and western AL... are very rural, hence not much cell or internet service, so you haven't heard much from us. We think service will get better once we get to Mobile. Listening to the weather, it's not likely we will leave here until at least Wednesday, and then there is a big backup of cruisers up river at both marinas and anchorages waiting to come down. In the next 200 miles (here to Mobile) there is only one gas stop and NO marinas, so it involves lots of anchoring. That will be tricky with the high water, currents, and more debris that will result from the storm. So likely, we won't get to Mobile for another 2 weeks.
We belong to the AGLCA -- American Great Loop Cruisers Association--- who maintain a daily email of Q&A among boaters as well as weather and other info. They have been providing terrific info re the storm, tieups, etc. so we are informed from a particular source besides the weather stations.
Yesterday we were able to go to church here in Demopolis (FUMC), and had lunch with a couple from the church who brought us back to the marina. Nice to learn about the area from local folks. We were also able to get a newspaper! :) We're able to do laundry here, and will get the courtesy car to make a Walmart run in a day or so. Seems where there are marinas, there is a Walmart nearby, and we've been able to keep provisions maintained easily. We will also make arrangements here to get the upper station radio fixed, as it gave up on Friday. Thsoe are really important to communicate with other boats and with the locks and marinas.
We're thinking of all of you, and hope you're thinking of us as well.
Shalom from the safe harbor of Demopolis.
